This Collage lesson was born out of a need to occupy my year 7s through the last couple of weeks of Term. Not surprising of year 7s, they took this idea and ran with it! I created a class set of paintings and asked each student to choose one that they liked. This would be the painting that they would turn into a collage.
I tried to select paintings that had big blocks of colour with clear areas and distinct forms so they could be easily replicated with 3D things.
They then had to go home and collect objects and stuff that they could use for the various parts of their paintings.
Their goal was to accurately depict their painting, by matching shapes, colours and composition.
The collages were created on 3mm thick cardboard. However, I got the kids to create their backgrounds first, simply using tissue paper and a glue stick. All the bits and pieces were then stuck on using Super Tac (my favourite glue in the whole wide world!)
I think I’ll introduce this task earlier on next year and actually make it an assessed task. They loved it and it was super fun to do as well!
