Can’t tell you how much fun and satisfying this unit of work has been. It only took about 3 hours all up and I think the results are amazing.
Gel printing is quick, relatively mess-free and the results are instant – which is fantastic with younger students! I had my class of 28 year 7 students, team up in pairs. Each pair created a multiple gel print work on an A2 piece of paper.
We used a range of different printing techniques and materials for our gel prints. A few included making our own paper stencils, paint markers directly onto the gel plates, magazine transfers and of course bubble wrap.
We took inspiration from the works of Drew Steinbrecher. Check out his site for a look at his fabulous works with gel printing.
The gel plates can be purchased from a number of different places, but we got our’s from Zart Art. They’re not terribly cheap, so I’ve bought a few plates over several months and I now have a grand total of 14 A5 sized plates. I find that one between two students works quite well.
There are thousands of ‘How to Gel print’ videos on YouTube. And they are ALL informative and somewhat mesmarising!
