In this Year 7 unit, my students explored the fascinating world of dragon mythology by creating their own dragon sculptures out of plaster.
Creating Mythical Magic: These Year 7 Dragon Sculptures were inspired by European and Chinese Legends. We began by exploring Gabrielle Wang‘s The Race for the Chinese Zodiac. Students then drew dragon pictures before crafting their own plaster sculptures.
Drawing inspiration from both European and Chinese dragon traditions, students learned about the cultural significance and distinct characteristics of each type of dragon. They then designed and crafted their unique sculptures, blending elements from both traditions and developing their skills in sculpture techniques and creative expression.
The whole project took a term (10 weeks!) but the end results were worth all the time spent. Every single student had such a great time making these dragon sculptures and they learnt so many new skills in the process.
